Wetlands

This has been an extremely wet year. This winter is very interesting for all the weather changes we are having. The week before it snowed we had a lot of rain. For those of you who do not live on wetlands I thought you might find it interesting to see what my gardens become in a very rainy week!

This is the path leading to the compost pile. I'd need a small boat to get there, so it's a good thing I put that bucket right by the sunroom door this year!!




Here is the Spicebush on the right. See how our shed is surrounded by a moat!!! That oughtta keep the mice out for a bit!



This area adjacent to our only neighbor has not been flooded in years now. This is a good measure of just how wet it has been getting. On the left you can see the area I have been building up for a new thicket, an additional habitat area to keep those little squirmy things away from the house!!



This area, formerly known as the play and hammock area, was almost the worst hit. It is the beginning of an extensive low lying lake, which we haven't seen for several years now. Usually we just have patch ponds throughout the yard when it rains.

that it continues all the way over to the other side of the woods! Now that is our great seasonal pond. It should be staying pretty full if the winter stays so wet. It freezes over and sometimes can be skated on. By spring our seasonal duck pair will stop by for a few weeks before moving on as it dries up in the warm weather.



The water soaked up within a few days as the weather stayed mild. The pond is still there. And a week later the snows came!!! And then they melted and then they came again!!!
Ah, the life in New England!!! LOL

I just love it!! And I am so enjoying chronicling all of it this year. I forgot how much there is to see and enjoy in this beautiful season. Now if I could just get used to the cold!!
